Their passion for trains goes beyond a mere mode of transportation; it embodies a training complex, an ardour for the rails that meander through landscapes, each journey a unique exploration of the world.

A prominent feature of Battambang's train scene is the bamboo train, an exclusive gem that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The train tracks in this small Cambodian town were laid initially during French colonialism.

However, with the departure of the French, the conventional trains vanished, leaving dormant tracks as mere relics. Yet, a new phenomenon emerged in the spirit of resourcefulness that characterizes the local population – the bamboo train.

The bamboo train's ingenious construction begins with repurposing discarded tank car wheels. These wheels are grouped in pairs, creating a rudimentary barbell-shaped structure. Bamboo planks are laid atop these wheel pairs, forming a platform for passengers.

A cooler and cushions further enhance the comfort of the ride. The entire structure is propelled by a gasoline engine connected to conveyor belts. In a throwback to simplicity, starting the engine involves wrapping a rough hemp rope around it and giving it a vigorous pull, eliciting the unmistakable beep that signals the start of the journey.

While the bamboo train's construction costs are meagre compared to conventional trains, it comes with a notable disparity in speed. The bamboo train cruises at a modest 40 km per hour, a far cry from the speeds attained by modern trains in larger nations, where they typically reach 150 km per hour.

Yet, this difference is inconsequential to those who revel in the unhurried pace of the bamboo train journey, savouring the scenery and the connection with the local landscape.

The bamboo train's ingeniousness extends to its braking system. Each train is equipped with a wooden stick beside the engine, featuring an iron hook at the bottom. When a driver spots another bamboo train ahead, they pry the wooden stick, bringing the train to a halt.

The interaction between drivers adds a familial touch to the experience. When one bamboo train yields to another, drivers collaborate to lift and shift the trains, creating a harmonious dance that allows both to continue on their respective journeys.

Initially, the bamboo train journey might not have been as picturesque, with weeds lining the tracks. However, as the experience gained popularity among tourists, the route has transformed into a scenic spectacle.

Travellers are now treated to views of rice paddies, trees, shrubs, river crossings, and bridges. Despite the enchanting scenery, travellers are advised to prepare for the tropical elements – safeguarding against sunburn and mosquitoes remains a prudent measure.
